The Free and the Brave
This song was written during my second tour in Iraq as part of the surge in 2007, and recorded after I returned home. The story behind the video is
here.

The Mudville Gazette is the on-line voice of an American warrior and his wife who stands by him. They prefer to see peaceful change render force of arms unnecessary. Until that day they stand fast with those who struggle for freedom, strike for reason, and pray for a better tomorrow.

Dawn Patrol

Holly Aho

Welcome to the Dawn Patrol, our daily roundup of information on the War on Terror and other topics - from the MilBlogs, other blogs, and the mainstream media. If you're a blogger, you can join the conversation. If you link to any of these stories, add a link to the Dawn Patrol too and your trackback will be added to the list. (We have a daily "Open Post" too, if you have something on another topic you can link there.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

IRAQ

Self help --[MREater - in Iraq]
I went with a unit on some mounted and dismounted patrols today, in both Arab and Kurdish areas.

The Blocking Position --[365 and a Wakeup - in Iraq]
As our patrol moved into the wide intersection our vehicles suddenly shifted from a slithering column into a multiheaded hydra. Each driver smoothly wheeled their vehicle into their respective clock position, and as the HMMWVs inched into position it almost looked like each respective head was carefully sniffing the intersections periphery.

Incoming! --[Akinoluna - in Iraq]
In between his war shouts about impending Axis and Allies battles, we heard a distant "Boom" and everybody looked around. "Did you hear that?"
Then there was another distant "Boom" and then we heard a "KABOOM!" close enough that it shook the office.

Hitting ground, part two --[Fun with Hand Grenades - in Iraq]
We?ve been in Kuwait for just under a week now and we?ve been busy as hell since we hit ground. For the first few days we got up around three in the morning and hit the rack around nine.

A Baghdad night of poetry... --[Iraq the Model - an Iraqi in Iraq]
We must keep up the constructive activities of art, literature and poetry and show the terrorists that they can never steal our humanity or kill the spirit of creation inside us?.

"Fully Capable" --[Major K - in Iraq]
In light of the resulting carping from people back in the US about this "regression." I would like to explain the difference between "fully capable" and "operational" and explain what "operating with US support" means as far as the reality on the ground based on my experience.

Rocket attack --[Phil and Becky]
We got a reminder the other day that we are still at war and that there are still people out there trying to kill us.

Interview AAR --[Who's Your Baghdaddy?]
Whenever we conduct a training event in the Army it is always followed by an After Action Review, or AAR. So here is my AAR on the Danny Fontana radio interview I did on Friday.

Tears of the Sun --[Treasure of Baghdad - an Iraqi in Iraq]
Yesterday, I visited my friends after I finished my work at the office. One of S., my friend, is a governmental employee. He was sent to Anbar Province heading a delegation taking relief to the refugees who left Qaem, a town at the borders with Syria, after the U.S. military operations started there to "get rid of the terrorists."

Iraq Progress Report For The Unbelievers -[A Soldier's Perspective]
These might seem trivial and are by no means all encompassing. There is much more progress being made, but I?ve already written about.

AFGHANISTAN

Rockets, man... --[A Storm in Afghanistan - in Afghanistan]
They rocketed us again the other night.
So, I hear, anyway.
Slept through it.
Apparently the evil, vicious, and yet clever horde of an enemy launched a daring attack against:
Our burn pit.

Some Pictures from Afghanistan --[Dadmanly]
The brother-in-law of a close family friend is serving in Afghanistan, and has graciously allowed me to post a few pictures he took during the recent elections.

In the first 24 hours after a series of bombs killed 22 people in a restaurant on a busy street and in two beachfront restaurants five miles away, investigators in Bali made rapid progress on Sunday, in part owing to a macabre bit of luck.

Creative Answer To A Simple Question --[Whispering Wolf]
So- why are you a Soldiers Angel, anyway?
-----------------------------------------
Please don?t ask about my thoughts on the current situation
Or on the current position of our great nation
Those things don?t have a thing to do with what I?ve got to say...

Since the martial response to 9/11, the marital attrition among active duty Army personnel has nearly doubled, even as total troop strength remained stable -- and at a time when the overall U.S. divorce rate is steadily drifting downward.
