The Free and the Brave
This song was written during my second tour in Iraq as part of the surge in 2007, and recorded after I returned home. The story behind the video is
here.

The Mudville Gazette is the on-line voice of an American warrior and his wife who stands by him. They prefer to see peaceful change render force of arms unnecessary. Until that day they stand fast with those who struggle for freedom, strike for reason, and pray for a better tomorrow.

Dawn Patrol

Holly Aho

Welcome to the Dawn Patrol, our daily roundup of information on the War on Terror and other topics - from the MilBlogs, other blogs, and the mainstream media. If you're a blogger, you can join the conversation. If you link to any of these stories, add a link to the Dawn Patrol too and your trackback will be added to the list. (We have a daily "Open Post" too, if you have something on another topic you can link there.)

IRAQ

Pictures blogger MREater couldn't post --[Soldiers Angel - Holly Aho]
Alan emailed me last night to tell me blogger is having problems with pictures and he has a few he wanted to put on his blog. Now I have to say this - Alan is often emailing me great pictures he has taken. I always look forward to opening my emails to see if he has sent some more pics my way. So it is my privilage to share with you the pictures he couldn't! Here they are...

the following morning --[Blog Machine City]
As a Crazed Iraq War Veteran?, I'm supposed to have vivid flashbacks of my traumatic time in the 'box (Sandbox, Iraq, Rumsfeldian Vietraq Quagswamp, etc.), not of my time on the university campus.

Tips for Troops (And Gloves Too!) --[Courage Without Fear - in Iraq]
We've also had some interesting things go on lately. One of my medics and several of my troops saved an Iraqi mans life.

The Lord?s Fingers --[Dadmanly - in Iraq]
Stepping out into the dawn, a strange and pungent smell greeted me, and it took a minute of reflection to realize just what it was. Rain.

Off to the Crystal Palace --[Firepower Forward - in Iraq]
Well, I've been back on the ground now a little better than a week and it's been, well, like I never left except a little cooler. That's not exactly true. While the air is still filled with dust, there is an atmosphere of change.

Hitting Ground --[Fun with Hand Grenades - in Iraq]
I think it?s a little bit ironic that I found myself getting off a plane in Kuwait City exactly one year to the day that I left home for the Army. It?s been a long time coming and it felt good to finally set my foot upon foreign soil.

How Many... --[Ma Deuce Gunner - in Iraq]
soldiers fighting "illegal" wars, who "steal oil" and "opress" the popluace get offered to join a family for tea during a patrol? Anyone?? Anyone?? Beuhler??

The First Report Is Always Wrong --[Major K - in Iraq]
Before I started training members of the Iraqi Army, I was the Intelligence Officer for an Infantry Battalion in one of the most violent sections of Baghdad as many of you know.

Not Something You See Everyday --[Warriors Voice - in Iraq]
On another note, I was not going to post about this in fear of upsetting warriorswife. My mind changed when I clicked on this link today. The title, ?Injured Marine defies attackers?, is very accurate. There is also a picture which says more than the author, David Kotok from the World Herald, can even comprehend. The reason I mention this article and the picture is because me and my team were about 25 ft from the IED when it went off.

One of the many things that always strikes me each day as I read through the message boards at Soldiers Angels is the incredible creativity and thoughtfulness of the angels in the program. The breaking news about DeLay took my eye off the media exaggerations during the Katrina coverage, but it didn't distract Hugh Hewitt from the story.
