I used to work for McDonnell Aircraft, the company that designed and made the F-15. An almost daily sight was a F-15 taking off from Lambert Airport. They would roll a short distance down the runway and almost as soon as they were airborne they would pull up into a vertical climb. This was referred to as a "Viking Departure". I don't know where the name came from, but I do recall hearing that the power of the two engines of the F-15 were sufficient for it to outrun the space shuttle...for about the first 50,000 feet or so.

I'm curious... if the F-15 is providing security for the shuttle launch, which I assume it is....
...why are the missle racks empty?
