The Center for American Progress wouldn't by any chance be a Leftist think tank, would it? Would you say the Washington Monthly has a definite leftward tilt also? Lawrence Kolb is a Brookings Institute fellow and aren't they a Democrat think tank? why is the left pushing for a military draft?

I don't think they are pushing for a draft.
I think their motives are to use the potential as a hammer to defeat the aggressive forward looking policies of this administration as relates to Islamic reactionary governments.
Personally,I think we do need a supplemental draft,we may as well face it,we have a generational war ongoing. Might be the next POTUS has to bring this forward, the VOLAR is the weak link in the WOT.

UMMM, NO, NO, and Hell NO! The military does not want a draft. The Army in particular does not want a draft, even though it's shorter on people than anybody else. Do not saddle the military with a bunch of whiny, unwilling, short-time, Morale killers. We don't want them, and a supplemental draft is just plain stupid. You're not stupid for suggesting it, it just means political suicide for whoever suggests it. We'll do without, Thanks anyway.

Part of the Army does, in fact, want the draft. That is why you see retired Army generals regularly complaining about the "shortage" of soldiers. The active duty Army, especially the units that are actively engaged, understand that the Army's problem is that it has too many, poorly-trained rear echelon soldiers and not enough highly-trained combat-ready forces. The appeal of the draft for Generals Sholes, Clark & Company is that it would allow the Army to avoid the necessary pain that force restructuring requires.

Yes, let's bring back the draft! Then we can watch the body bags mount like they did during Vietnam. We can invest millions in capturing and trying those that go to Canada and elsewhere.
As a Vietnam Era Vet, I remember the "assembly line soldiers." I remember how many of them had poor morale. How many of them went to drugs to escape the horrors of war they were forced to fight! How many died because politics became more important than the welfare of our troops. How the greed of big businesses and politicians took precedance over the welfare of our troops!!
We don't have the best trained Military in the world because of the draft. We have the best trained military because it is made up of young men and women who voulunteered to defend our country.
If you want to improve our military and increase recuitment, stop taking away their benefits. Give them adequate medical care. Look after their families. Take care of the wounded. Give them what they need to do their job.
No matter whether a draft exists or not, troop morale starts to dwindle when their benefits do not provide them a decent quality of life.
The long term cost in additional training, loss of life, managing the draft has to be far greater than simply doing the decent thing and providing a decent means for our present troops to get mediacl care and live above the poverty level as they have had to do for some time now.
So yes! Bring back the draft. Then we will lose the War on Terror!! Every American better arm themselves. We will no longer be safe in our own homes. Our whole way of life will be at risk. The terrorists will have scceeded in bringing us to our knees as Osama bin Laden said he would do by destroying us from within.

Please, no draft! Give our service men & women a decent wage, benefits & pensions, and you will see a big increase in enlistment. After all, who deserves these things more than people who put their lives on the line? Compare what they now get to what someone who serves one term in Washington gets when they leave office.

It looks to me that the military is currently stretched too much. Supply is not meeting demand. A draft is on the horizon.
