James Bradley's book, Flags of Our Fathers, is a fantastic read. It was the first book I read about the war in the Pacific. I have read others since but Flags of Our Fathers is the most personal account I've found. The author is the son of Doc Bradley, one of the flag raisers, and did a great job researching and putting together a very comprehensive account of that battle... all without ever speaking of it with his father. I highly recomend it.
He also wrote a book called Flyboys about pilots shot down near (and taken prisoner) an island called ChiChi Jima. George Bush senior was shot down within sight of ChiChi Jima. This is also a very realistic and brutal account of what the war in the Pacific was like. Again, highly recomended.
