Why not use some of the login services like TypeKey? This is supposed, repeat "supposed", to miniminze the junk.

That is being considered

My sympathies, entirely. Comments with suspect keywords go into a holding file at The Daily Brief, but it is still a chore to review the file and delete fifteen or twenty at a time, several times a day.
I entertain fantasies of somehow being able to track down the idiots responsible for this cyber-vandalism and doing something really nasty to their server, their computer... or to them. It would involved spiked clubs and nests of ravenous fire ants....

Mrs. G. ~ How you and your husband have time to write this log & do it WELL, while supporting a warrior & fighting a war..... you have my admiration. Good job & no appologies needed.

Gail said it very well - no apologies are necessary, Mrs. G! Thanks to both of you for doing such a good job :-)
Sgt. Mom - My fantasies would include dark rooms and hungry rats, personally ...

Buddy of mine works at an entertainment law firm. The new IT director put a filter on all email containing foul language and explicit terms. After a week they realized the filter stopped virtually all of their email:-- notes, scripts, song lyrics, etc.
When they took the filter off, the entire office was deluged with "legitimate" mail that the filter blocked!

May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their private parts and their arms be too short to scratch. That would be a good punishment.

I completely sympathise.
One thing you can do is to rename your default comments file, which will cut down on the automated spams. It won't get rid of them, but it'll help.
I did this and it helped. Follow the instructions here:

Commiserations, Amigo.
We see, in your efforts, that 'free speech' is not without a cost. Thanks for paying part of it on our behalf.
-Sigh...-
