Well, call me a mouthpiece for the Bush Regime, I spent some time with him in a small group during his first campaign for Governor. The details aren't really important but I was impressed. That was just after I'd been elected to my first (of three) terms as a Republican Precinct Chairman. During those six years I met a lot of politicos, from city council to school board to US Senator. Almost every politician I ever met, when speaking with them in a room, their eyes always are scanning for someone more important.
Try it yourself, go to a meet and greet with your local congresscritter, try to maintain eye contact during your three minutes. He (she) will be looking over your shoulder the whole time. Bush doesn't. He talks with you, not at you. He also pays attention to what ordinary people have to say.
I understand why those guys in the messhall at Ft. Polk responded to him, just like the race fans at Daytona, the deck crew of the Lincoln and the men and women in Iraq on Thanksgiving. It's real, he's real.
That's reason #1 why he's going to win in November. People like the war hee-row Kerry have been so fake for so long they can't cope with real.
