Even the most liberal people that I know are horrified by these stories. There are many who are against the war (a minority over all), but promotion of the murder of our soldiers is right out. I suppose you could find someone in Berkeley wouldn't be angered by this, but even there, I bet it would be a minority.

I think Robert is correct. I had a post about a few people in the bay area that were for the terrorists. They hoped more deaths would lead to Bush losing an election...

As is the unique situation in America - we do have both sides verbal. However, no self respecting American backs this kind of crap.
We are entitled to voice our opinions, that is part of the freedom that has been so hard fought. BUT....murder and mehiem is not acceptable and needs - dare I say will - be addressed.
It breaks my heart sometimes.

The vast majority of us are with you. Unfortunately, the fringe is very vocal and they always get the press. The rest of us would like to punch them in the face. Don't worry about it.

There are really three "grounds", here. The first belongs to those who support American efforts in Iraq (and elsewhere) and stand behind the President.
On the second stands the group of Left Wing Idiots who actively and openly protest the war, the World Trade Organization, believe in all the ridiculous 9/11 theories.... you know the ones.
Then, there are those who hate Bush, but whose sense of decency prevents them from openly siding with the Iraqi Baathist terrorists. However, they feel - I think in many cases sublimely - that as long as the attacks against coalition forces are going on and seems unstoppable, then there might be a positive fall-out in that it hurts Bush's chances in '04. If you listen closely the dialogue by many, you'll hear that.

The first time I heard of this I thought that we should have let the Soviets keep Germany, the whole thing. Next I thought we should have just kept bombing Germany well into the 1950s.

This antique ex-hippy Vietnam war protester sincerely wishes he was young enough to sign up for this one.
In other words I and most of the folks I know are behind the military 100%. Best of everthing to all of you in the military. Aloha

I think stories like this help Bush. A lot.
To someone "legitimately" opposing the liberation of Iraq, whackos like these people, to paraphrase a prophet, "Make their name stink among the gentiles."
Most people will see that Ted Rall, and Ted Kennedy, are making common cause with such people. This can only help Bush.
Also, tolerating such whackos will lower the German govt in the eyes of most people. When the German govt expresses indignation at being excluded as a prime contractor in Iraq, or decries the means used to remove Saddam, who will take them seriously?
No, these groups are so helpful that a properly paranoid mind would suspect they are a CIA front.

Joel
re "CIA plot": I must say I see your point! And I'll add that those folks who are truly "anti-war" have a sort of respect from me that the "anti-Bush" crowd will never earn.
In general us military folks are the most "anti-war" group there is. Though once the shooting starts we tend to leave that behind.
From my sidebar:
"The Mudville Gazette is the on-line voice of an American warrior, who prefers to see peaceful change render force of arms unnecessary. Until that day he stands fast with those who struggle for freedom, strike for reason, and pray for a better tomorrow."

And thanks to those who responded, and to any others who might.
I'll add that I see a distinct difference between "liberal" - which I take to mean both open minded and open to debate - and "leftist" which I take to mean closed to all views other then their own. "Far left" is perhaps the better term for such a person.
