Greetings! You are reading an article from The Mudville Gazette. To reach the front page, with all the latest news and views, click the logo above or "main" below. Thanks for stopping by! November 23, 2009 War and progressBy Greyhawk"As presidential historian Robert Dallek reminds us, 'war kills off great reform movements'," the Members said, noting that World War I ended the Progressive Era, Korea ended Harry Truman's Fair Deal and Vietnam ended Lyndon Johnson's Great Society. "The members" noted in the excerpt from their press release quoted above are members of the U.S. House of Representatives... Congressman Dave Obey (D-WI), the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman John Murtha (D-PA), the Chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, Congressman John Larson (D-CT), the Chairman of the Democratic Caucus......who are warning America about the cost of war in Afghanistan. Their solution is to raise taxes, and they aren't alone: Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), the Chairman of the Financial Services Committee, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA), Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN), Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA), Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA), and Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (D-CA), joined Obey, Murtha and Larson as original co-sponsors of the measure. The cost of war issue was already noted here, but there's another angle to that historical observation that's worth noting. The argument that World War I ended the Progressive Era might be true enough for the United States - but it also ended with Progressives well on their way to control of Russia - a control they maintained for the remainder of the century. Likewise Vietnam ended with Progressives victorious there, too. So of the three examples given, the only one where the "Progressive Movement" arguably lost at home and abroad was Korea. On the other hand, even though the enemy there is a group of stone-age thugs, the odds favoring anything that could be called a "Progressive" victory in Afghanistan are slim, at best. (In fact, Russian misadventures there arguable hastened the downfall of the Soviet Union.) So you can't fault "Progressives" if they insist that while President Obama hasn't even had a chance to name his hypothetically promised new/fair/great deal/society yet, whatever wonderful thing you imagine it would have provided you for free you can blame the war if it doesn't show up under your Christmas tree this year. Assuming, of course, you "do" Christmas. President Obama hasn't even had a chance to name his hypothetically promised new/fair/great deal/society yet
I thought it was called the Age of Obama. There are even books out about it.
