November 10, 2009 Ft Hood Memorial CeremonyBy GreyhawkScheduled for 2PM Eastern. Fox News just (1:20) reported that the president's remarks will be approximately 15 minutes long, and "the White House is telling us that his speech will be 'somber and uplifting.'" The Washington Post reports that the event is "giving him [President Obama] another opportunity to express outrage over the deaths and to tell the nation that the government is taking steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future." USA Today: "Obama assumes role of presidential healer in times of crisis" Coincidentally, the New York Times makes several of the same points. So does the AP: Obama Takes Turn as Healer-in-Chief. An earlier report ran with the same theme, including citations of Obama's predecessors in similar circumstances, as does this report from al Jazeera - who took time to find videos. (However, they missed the obvious one.) I'll offer up a different idea: today is about the fallen. This version should be free of network talking head interruptions. Ceremony has concluded. First reports are generally submitted in the heat of battle before any real analysis can take place. Therefore, they're highly subjective, based on limited information, and rarely hit the mark. So as the first reports of 'surgical strikes' on Iraqi forces come in, it's best to take those reports with a grain of salt... Iraqi BlogsSalam Pax, Baghdad: The bombing aould come and go in waves, nothing too heavy and not yet comparable to what was going on in 91. all radio and TV stations are still on and while the air raid began the Iraqi TV was showing patriotic songs and didn't even bother to inform viewers that we are under attack. at the moment they are re-airing yesterday's interview with the minister of interior affairs. THe sounds of the anti-aircarft artillery is still louder than the booms and bangs which means that they are still far from where we live, but the images we saw on Al Arabia news channel showed a building burning near one of my aunts house... Why on earth would the lead of any of these stories even focus on Obama? It's his JOB to be there for the service, after all. He's not exactly going above and beyond.
And, I don't understand why the media continues to run this story as "deranged maniac facing stressful personnel issues goes nuts."
He wasn't nuts - he was a Muslim radical terrorist who chose a vulnerable target and attacked. He is an ENEMY! Suggesting that he has some sort of common cause with any US soldiers is an abomination.
I have no problem with the media calling him a soldier - he IS a soldier, except he's fighting for Al Qaeda. I don't know why that seems so hard for the media to comphrehend.
And I believe one of the generals had a line I thought hinted at Hassan's rightful place in the military.... I have to review and find it...
Good speech. If obama continues to focus on the topic at hand instead of talking about himself and blaming bush there may actually be hope for him as a cic.

I agree, it was a good speech, (there were three good speeches, in fact) and I don't blame the president for the media spotlight focusing on him. I just wish it didn't border on worship.
Quatto said (in his post on Ft Hood) "It is my sincere hope that before I die the American media will present me with a national tragedy that horrifies and saddens me on its own merits, unaided by horrifying and saddening press coverage."
Something like that applies here.
While I have been highly critical of the President polices in the past, his tribute to the victims at Ft. Hood was a shinning example of what I believe most Americans wish from their President in such a somber event. So thank you Mr. President you gave our fallen respect and honor.
If Obama really cared about soldiers he would allow them to carry weapons while on post.
