January 10, 2009 Iraq: provincial elections and the sweet smell of successBy GreyhawkIf success in Iraq can be defined as "establishing an American-style democracy" then success appears to have been achieved. The Los Angeles Times: "Iraq's Novice Political Candidates Embrace Campaigning" In Jan. 31 provincial elections, 14,400 hopefuls are vying for 440 seats. Many are running like pros, undeterred by the threat of violence or other candidates' questionable tactics.A quote from a "I'm a young man. I'm not employed, not married," he said. "People told me if this guy won, he will employ you, give you money and a house and marry you to someone. . . . I don't believe he's going to help me. As soon as he wins the election, he will forget us. But he gave me money and a car, and they said, even if he doesn't win, I can keep the car."From the same report: "Several candidates have complained that their posters, plastered on concrete blast walls across the capital, have been ripped down or defaced." The AP, however, reports one area of contrast with American democracy: Iraq Seeks Fair Coverage, Issues Reporters' Code: The government wants to require foreign and Iraqi journalists to sign a code of conduct in exchange for permission to attend this month's provincial elections, raising concerns among media analysts that independent coverage could be undermined. However, as in America "Most of Iraq's political parties operate their own newspapers and television stations". My prediction: within four years Iraq will have a "community organizer" group (probably called "Date Palm") involved in voter registration. The Mudville Gazette is the on-line voice of an American warrior and his wife who stands by him. They prefer to see peaceful change render force of arms unnecessary. Until that day they stand fast with those who struggle for freedom, strike for reason, and pray for a better tomorrow.

However, as in America "Most of Iraq's political parties operate their own newspapers and television stations".
But---- unlike America, they clearly state that it is THEIR media outlet, and make no pretense to objective credibility. Huge difference.
I think it would be a laugh riot if the MSM had to operate according to the Iraqi 'fairness' regulations all the time. How could they manage to say much of anything at all, about anything at all? Lots of cute animal stories would be suddenly required as filler.
On page 1.
Dougf, I'd be content just to see public pressure and/or watchdog groups compel the MSM to publicly declare their biases, and/or honestly admit where their reporting diverges from the facts on the ground ... then disseminate these admissions in something more than a "Corrections" column on page 28D.
Admittedly, both are tall orders for a profession so steeped in moral relativism -- a primary, underlying characteristic that is behind so much of the faulty intel provided to us by the jackals of the Fourth Estate.
But we don't need no steenkin' Fairness Doctrine ... of any flavor ... imposed by law in an attempt to make that happen. That cure would become far worse than the disease, were it to infect the public discourse.
The contrast between "voluntary" disclosures by the MSM and the Fairness Doctrine, is quite similar to the difference between merely requiring full disclosure of campaign financing, and the McCain-Feingold Incumbent/MSM Empowerment Act.
