How the Dems Sacked Hackett

By Greyhawk

In late November, Hackett got a call from Sen. Harry Reid. “I hear there’s a photo of you mistreating bodies in Iraq. Is it true?” demanded the Senate minority leader.
We first noted the story of Paul Hackett's "withdrawal" from the Ohio Senate campaign earlier this week. Now Mother Jones offers a peek under the rock at some of the "inside politics" involved. It ain't pretty:
Hackett was running against seven-term Akron Democrat Rep. Sherrod Brown in a May primary, with the winner going on to face two-term Republican Sen. Mike DeWine in November (assuming DeWine wins his own primary against a longshot Republican challenger). DeWine is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbent Republicans, and the national Democratic Party is pulling out the stops to defeat him.

But first, the Democrats had to get Hackett out of the way. The weapons used in the rubout included economic sabotage, whisper campaigns, and threats.

Hackett, an Iraq War combat veteran, was hailed last summer as just the kind of “fighting Democrat” the party needed to reinvigorate its base and end its years in the congressional wilderness. After narrowly losing a race for Congress in a lopsidedly Republican district outside Cincinnati last August, the telegenic veteran—famous for dissing President Bush as a “chickenhawk” and “sonuvabitch” while on the stump—was courted heavily by Democratic leaders, including Sens. Charles Schumer and Harry Reid, to take on DeWine. But no sooner did Hackett enter the Senate race last October than Brown announced his candidacy for Senate, reversing an earlier decision he had made to stay out of the race.
<...>
In late November, Hackett got a call from Sen. Harry Reid. “I hear there’s a photo of you mistreating bodies in Iraq. Is it true?” demanded the Senate minority leader. “No sir,” replied Hackett. To drive home his point, Hackett traveled to Washington to show Reid’s staff the photo in question. Hackett declined to send me the photo, but he insists that it shows another Marine—not Hackett—unloading a sealed body bag from a truck. “There was nothing disrespectful or unprofessional,” he insists. “That was a photo of a Marine doing his job. If you don’t like what they’re doing, don’t send Marines into war.”

A staffer in Reid’s office confirmed that Hackett had showed them several photos. “The ones I saw were part of a diary he kept while serving in Iraq and were in no way compromising. The one picture in question depicted Marines doing their work on what looked like a scorching day in Iraq,” said the aide.

But the whispering continued, and Hackett was troubled. “It creates doubt and suspicion,” Hackett told me, saying his close supporters were asking him privately about the rumors. “It tarnishes my very strength as a candidate, my military service. It’s like you take a handful of seeds, throw them up in the wind, and they blow all around and start growing. It really bothered me.”

Hackett backers suspected the smear was being floated by Sherrod Brown’s campaign. A senior Brown staffer angrily dismissed the charge this week as “ridiculous.”

Brown campaign spokesperson Joanna Kuebler declined to respond to the rumors. She offered this prepared statement: “This campaign has never been about Paul Hackett or about Sherrod Brown. This campaign is about the hard working people of Ohio, and what Republican corruption has done to them.”

No doubt the whispers were enough to get his financial backers' attention.

Update: The Cleveland Plain dealer confirms the rumor stories:

In an interview with The Plain Dealer, Hackett said he knew the source of the rumors but didn't want to elaborate.

He referred a reporter to Clermont County Democratic chairman David Lane, who said Friday that he has "seen no proof that a Democrat" was behind the rumors.

He said Hackett might have mentioned him because he had told Hackett last fall that Dan Lucas, an aide to Brown, had said to him shortly after Brown entered the race that "there are things out there about Paul that I don't think he [Hackett] really wants to be made public."

The piece offers a laundry list of accusations of ineptitude within the Hackett campaign. (HT: Kevin)

Hackett had very bad poll numbers.
Hackett hadn't raised nearly as much money.

How do you feel about Mother Jones calling Hackett a "combat veteran" when his combat experience, as a Civil Affairs Officer, includes being in a convoy that was attacked. Did he fire back? It's not clear.

I'm a huge fan of Sherrod Brown, it is true.

Was Jean Schmidt, whose ill chosen words shut down the US House for twenty minutes for secret meetings about her imminent and vocal apology, a top notch Republican? Surely not.

There is, in fact, absolutely no evidence that
a) anyone called Hackett's funders
b) there was any smear campaign (as Hackett basically asserts)

Whispering campaign?

What a gossip you are for repeating it without qualification.

Best of luck to Messrs Brown and DeWine in their upcoming Senate race.

-a Marine Democrat

The Democrats have lost all of their morals and their marbles.

I think anyone who has been attacked in Iraq is a combat veteran. I won't think any less of him for not getting a chance to shoot back.

And I'll damn sure never look with scorn on the work being done by the Civil Affairs guys - rebuilding Iraq outside the wire.

And yes - I speculated when he first withdrew that Hackett's anti-war/war-hero shtick wasn't polling well in Ohio. The Dems wouldn't have tossed a winner.

But you think Hackett's lying about his meeting with Reid? Or are you saying Reid was lying about those photos?

This is a silly whisper campaign that does not pass the common sense test. First, absolutely, if his poll numbers showed he was going to lose then it is the DNC's duty to not have him be the candidate. You must win. The RNC would do EXACTLY the same thing and I would expect nothing less from either.

Second, if his poll numbers were "ok" there would be no better candidate than a combat vet who was against the war. However, you bet, the DNC had to be very careful. Because, if it came out later that he was part of that, the Republicans would jump on and say the DNC's candidate is a war crime person so, yes, they have to be careful.

Remember, the REPUBLICANS took a decorated war hero from Vietnam and made claims that he may have shot himself to get a purple heart.. Remember how the 'PUBS took a war hero and shot him down and clouded his record?

The Republicans lie during campaigns and that was proven during the Republican financed swift boat "for truth" campaign. If there is any opening, the Republicans will take it and get their cronies to lie to start "whisper campaigns". Then, people like you publish it and "away we go".

Kevin:

First, absolutely, if his poll numbers showed he was going to lose then it is the DNC's duty to not have him be the candidate.

Are you familiar with the idea of the party primary? That would have been the venue to let the voters decide who should represent their party come November.

So, why apply the bullyboy treatment to Hackett and deny him his platform?

Because the Democrats are starting to realize that their reflexive anti-war and anti-military horseshit is losing them power. They are throwing out what they would have us believe were their principles just for the sake of electoral viability. Chumps.

Toby:

Have you observed ANY politics in your lifetime. Any reason why, in 2000, the Republicans "annointed" Bush? Remember the hatchett job the RNC did on McCain when it looked like he was going to really put a big push against Bush. Unfortunately, in this day and age, the parties (both of them) do select favorites early on. Why? because they will eat each other alive during the Primary then idiot Republicans will use it against them in the final election. So, they have no choice but to "select" early.

Lets follow this: Lets say that during the primary the democratic opponent raises the issue of Hackett's role in torture in Iraq. A fair question if there is even a remote bit of evidence. They will hash it out back and forth while the Republicans take notes>

Lets now say that it is proven false and Hackett wins the primary. Are you telling me that you think the Republicans would not run hate/attack ads a la Swift Boat? I can see it now, the ad will be, "Even Hackett's own party believes he may have tortured Iraqi prisoners...". A true statement since they would have discussed it at one point but major league misleading since it would have been solved. But, who cares, since the Repubs would have accomplished what they wanted.

Just look at what happenned when the Dems ran a true war hero against the Repubs draft dodger - Bush. The Repubs allowed the draft dodger to become President then raised enough of a cloud to make people think that maybe Kerry shot himself to get a PH.

Wake up. If the Repubs would not run Willie Horton ads then maybe we could have a true primary.

IIRC, the original Willie Horton ads were run by Democrats, against Democrats.

Maybe we could have real choices in our elections, if the Democrats would be less obsessed with being different than Republicans ... and focus instead on sound principle.

>>... that was proven during the Republican financed swift boat "for truth" campaign...>>

If you're saying that the statements made by those on the Swift Boat website were untrue, please provide proof.

Kevin, I don't think you have yet allowed yourself to understand the facts about John Kerry's service or what he did in those first years afterwards. The degree of denial you are in has obviously affected your approach to this issue, but I cannot help you through it.

And where did you get this crap about Bush being a draft dodger? Learn that from Alec Baldwin?

The so-called faculty of writing is not so much a faculty of writing as it is a faculty of thinking. When a man says, "I have an idea but I can't express it"; that man hasn't an idea but merely a vague feeling. If a man has a feeling of that kind, and will sit down for a half an hour and persistently try to put into writing what he feels, the probabilities are at least 90 percent that he will either be able to record it, or else realize that he has no idea at all. In either case, he will do himself a benefit.

That's wisdom from the past, captured for posterity at the US Naval Institute, shared via the web on the institute's 137th anniversary.

From their about page:

The Naval Institute shall remain

INDEPENDENT - A non-profit member association, with no government support, that does not lobby for special interests;

NON-PARTISAN - An independent, professional military association with a mission, goals and objectives that transcend political affiliations; and shall encourage

IDEAS - Through its respected journals Proceedings and Naval History, its conferences, its books and its online content, in support of those who serve.

"The Naval Institute has three core activities," among them, History and Preservation:

The Naval Institute also has recently introduced Americans at War, a living history of Americans at war in their own words and from their own experiences. These 90-second vignettes convey powerful stories of inspiration, pride, and patriotism.

Take a look at the collection, and you'll see it's not limited to accounts from those who served on ships at sea, members of the other branches are well-represented.

I'm fortunate to have met USNI's Mary Ripley, she's responsible for the institute's oral history program (and she's the daughter of the late John Ripley, whose story is told here). She also deserves much credit for their blog. ("We're not the Navy nor any government agency. Blog and comment freely.") We met at a milblog conference - Mary knew (and I would come to realize) that milbloggers are the 21st-century version of exactly what the US Naval Institute is all about. Once that light bulb came on in my head, I mentioned a vague idea for a project to her - milblogs as the 21st century oral history that they are.

"Put that in writing," she said (of course - see first paragraph above!) - and here's part of the result.

Shortly after the first tent was pitched by the American military in Iraq a wire was connected to a computer therein, and the internet was available to a generation of Americans at war - many of whom had grown up online. From that point on, at any given moment, somewhere in Iraq a Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine was at a keyboard sharing the events of his or her day with the folks back home. While most would simply fire off an email, others took advantage of the (then) relatively new online blogging platforms to post their thoughts and experiences for the entire world to see. The milblog was born - and from that moment to this stories detailing everything from the most mundane aspects of camp life to intense combat action (often described within hours of the event) have been available on the web...

And et cetera - but since you're reading this on a milblog, you probably knew that. And you know that milblogs aren't just blogs written by troops at war, that many friends, family members, and supporters likewise documented their story of America at war online in near-real time, as those stories developed.

The diversity in membership of that group is broad, the one thing we all have in common is the impulse to make sense of the seemingly senseless, and communicate the tale - for each of us that impulse was strong enough to overcome whatever barriers prevent the vast majority of people from doing the same. Everyone at some point has some vague idea they believe should be shared - we were the people who, from some combination of internal and external urging, found and spent those many half hours persistently trying to write it down.

*****

But where will all that be in another 137 years? Or five or ten, for that matter. That's something I've asked myself since at least 2004 - when I wrote this:

Closing Blogs is nothing new. So many site's owners just give up on their own. They come and go, you know, these MilBloggers do. Like any other sort of blogger. Many post in the lonely down hours far from home, spill their guts for the world, then abandon their spots when the tour of duty is up. They have lives again somewhere in the world, and no need to share the details. So it goes.

Many are truly gone - no site left at all. "The page cannot be found." Other blogs remain, like abandoned defensive positions in shifting desert sands.

Membership in the ghost battalion has grown in the years since, and an ever growing majority of those abandoned-but-still-standing sites are vanishing. Have you checked out Lt Smash's site lately? How about Sgt Hook's? If you're a long-time milblog reader you know the first widely-read milblog from Operation Iraq Freedom and the first widely-read milblog from Afghanistan are both gone from the web. If you're a relative newcomer to this world you may never even have heard of them - or the dozens upon dozens of others who carried forth the standard they set down.

If you have a vague notion that something should be done about that, (a notion I've heard expressed more than once...) then you and I and the good folks at the US Naval Institute are in agreement. Preserving the history documented by the milbloggers is just one of the goals of the milblog project, the once-vague idea that we're now making real.

And it's a big idea, if I say so myself - too big to explain in one simple blog post, so stand by for more. Likewise, it's too big a task to be accomplished by just one person. So if you're a milblogger (and exactly what is a milblogger? is a topic for much further discussion on its own) I'm asking for your help. All I'll really need is just a little bit (maybe just one or two of those half hours...) of your time, and your willingness to tell the tale.

We've already made history, it's time to save it.

The Mudville Gazette is the on-line voice of an American warrior and his wife who stands by him. They prefer to see peaceful change render force of arms unnecessary. Until that day they stand fast with those who struggle for freedom, strike for reason, and pray for a better tomorrow.

Tending Distant
Fires

Far from hearth and home, watching
Cold alone but not alone
On distant shore and only wanting
Safe return and little more

What tales we'll tell
When that time comes
When tales can be told

When things grim
Seem far away
When other fires go cold

Some distant sunset, vision fading
Memories remain
And tired eyes gaze 'pon folded flags
While distant drums beat their refrain

Saluting fallen friends whose names
And youth will never fade
Here's to those on other shores,
for them live well, the price is paid
